The City of Lakes , Where Every View Is a Painting

By Hiistories

There are cities that are beautiful. And then there is Udaipur.

Udaipur does not ease you in with gradual reveals. It presents itself all at once , the moment you catch your first glimpse of Lake Pichola with the City Palace rising from its eastern shore and the Lake Palace floating in the middle of the water like something from a dream, the city makes its case completely. You understand immediately why it has been called the Venice of the East, the City of Lakes, the most romantic city in India.

What those names do not prepare you for is the scale. The City Palace is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. The lakes are not decorative ponds , they are large, working reservoirs that have defined the city’s geography and identity since the 16th century. The Aravalli hills surrounding the city are genuinely dramatic , dark and rocky and rising steeply from the lake shores in a way that makes the whole city feel cradled.

Six centuries of Mewar maharajas built this city with the specific intention of making it beautiful. They succeeded so completely that Udaipur now draws visitors from every corner of the world who come expecting the photographs and leave unable to adequately describe what the photographs missed.

This is the Hiistories guide to the ten places that matter most. Here is where to start.

Udaipur, at the Right Hour

Udaipur rewards those who arrive knowing where to be and when — the boat on Lake Pichola at 4:30 PM, the right table at Ambrai, Sajjangarh before the crowds arrive. Our private Udaipur tours are built around exactly that kind of timing.

1. Lake Pichola , The Soul of the City

Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur, Hii Stories, Rajasthan tour, places to visit in udaipur, udaipur travel guide 2026, udaipur tourist places, best places in udaipur, lake pichola udaipur, city palace udaipur, lake palace hotel udaipur, sajjangarh monsoon palace, jag mandir udaipur, ambrai ghat udaipur, fateh sagar lake, udaipur sightseeing, things to do in udaipur, city of lakes rajasthan

Everything in Udaipur begins and ends at Lake Pichola.

The artificial lake , built in 1362 by a local tribal chieftain and expanded by successive Mewar maharajas , is 4 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide at its fullest. On its eastern shore, the City Palace complex rises directly from the water. In its centre, the Lake Palace Hotel sits on a four-acre island. On its southern section, the Jag Mandir island palace floats in the water. The Aravalli hills rise behind everything.

At golden hour , the forty minutes before sunset to twenty minutes after , Lake Pichola becomes the most beautiful body of water in India. The City Palace turns from white to gold. The Lake Palace mirrors the shifting light in its own reflection. The sky performs its most dramatic sequence of the day directly above everything.

A boat ride on the lake at this hour , from Rameshwar Ghat, past the Lake Palace, to Jag Mandir and back , is the single most beautiful experience available in Udaipur. It is not optional. It is the reason you came.

  • Boat hire: ₹400–700 per hour from Rameshwar Ghat
  • Jag Mandir boat: ₹400 per person including entry , book at Rameshwar Ghat
  • Best time: depart at 4:30 PM to be on the water for the full sunset
  • Lake level: fullest October to January after the monsoon

2. City Palace , The Largest Palace in Rajasthan

Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur, Hii Stories, Golden triangle, Rajasthan tour, places to visit in udaipur, udaipur travel guide 2026, udaipur tourist places, best places in udaipur, lake pichola udaipur, city palace udaipur, lake palace hotel udaipur, sajjangarh monsoon palace, jag mandir udaipur, ambrai ghat udaipur, fateh sagar lake, udaipur sightseeing, things to do in udaipur, city of lakes rajasthan

The City Palace of Udaipur is not one building. It is eleven connected palaces built over four centuries by successive maharanas of the Mewar dynasty , each one adding their section, their courtyards, their towers, until the whole became the largest palace complex in Rajasthan.

Five kilometres of corridors. 244 rooms. Terraces that drop directly to the lake below. A view from the Amar Vilas rooftop terrace that encompasses the entire Lake Pichola panorama in a single glance.

Inside, the Sheesh Mahal is a chamber of coloured glass mosaics that fill the room with fractured, jewel-toned light. The Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard) is covered in 5,000 glass mosaic tiles forming three peacocks in extraordinary detail. The Zenana Mahal , the women’s quarters , houses one of the finest collections of miniature paintings in Rajasthan.

The palace is still partially a living royal residence , the Maharana of Mewar maintains apartments here , which gives it a quality that purely museum-ised palaces lack. This is not a monument to dead history. It is a building that has been continuously lived in and cared for since 1559.

Go in the morning when the light falls through the Sheesh Mahal at its best angle. Hire a licensed guide , the palace’s layered history across multiple eras requires explanation to make sense. Allow three hours minimum.

  • Entry: ₹300 (Indian nationals), ₹700 (foreign nationals)
  • Timings: 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM daily
  • Best time: 9:30 to 11 AM for the morning interior light
  • Guide hire: available at the entrance , approximately ₹300–500

3. Lake Palace Hotel , The Most Romantic Building in India

Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur, Hii Stories, Rajasthan tour, Golden tour, places to visit in udaipur, udaipur travel guide 2026, udaipur tourist places, best places in udaipur, lake pichola udaipur, city palace udaipur, lake palace hotel udaipur, sajjangarh monsoon palace, jag mandir udaipur, ambrai ghat udaipur, fateh sagar lake, udaipur sightseeing, things to do in udaipur, city of lakes rajasthan

The Lake Palace Hotel sits on a four-acre island in the middle of Lake Pichola , a completely white marble palace built in 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II as a summer pleasure palace and converted by the Taj Hotels group into what many consider the most romantic hotel in Asia.

James Bond slept here. Octopussy was filmed here. Every person who has ever stood on the shore of Lake Pichola and looked at it has felt the same powerful desire to be on the island rather than beside the lake.

If you are staying here: you already know. The boat transfer from the shore, the white marble corridors, the rooftop pool with the lake on every side, the breakfast as the morning mist clears , it is one of the great hotel experiences on earth.

If you are not staying here: non-resident guests can dine at the hotel restaurant or have drinks at the bar. The experience of sitting inside the Lake Palace at dusk, with the shore lights of Udaipur reflecting on the water around you, is worth every rupee of the premium.

Book the restaurant weeks in advance during peak season , it fills consistently.

  • Lake Palace Hotel: rates from ₹35,000 per night
  • Non-resident dining: book well in advance , essential during October to March
  • Boat transfer: arranged by the hotel from Rameshwar Ghat
  • Octopussy scree

4. Sajjangarh , The Monsoon Palace at Sunset

Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur, Hii Stories, Golden triangle, places to visit in udaipur, udaipur travel guide 2026, udaipur tourist places, best places in udaipur, lake pichola udaipur, city palace udaipur, lake palace hotel udaipur, sajjangarh monsoon palace, jag mandir udaipur, ambrai ghat udaipur, fateh sagar lake, udaipur sightseeing, things to do in udaipur, city of lakes rajasthan

Sajjangarh Palace , the Monsoon Palace , sits on a hilltop 5 kilometres from Udaipur at 944 metres above sea level. Built in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh to observe monsoon clouds and track his armies across the plains, it was never completed and has been largely empty since independence.

From the hilltop terrace, the view encompasses Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar, the entire city of Udaipur, and on clear days the Aravalli hills extending to the horizon. At sunset it is one of the most extraordinary panoramic views in India.

The palace itself is a beautiful ruin , partially restored, atmospheric, and far less crowded than the City Palace. The drive up through the Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary is lovely , nilgai, wild boar, and the occasional leopard use the forest.

Go at 4:30 PM. Stay as long as the light lasts. The view at dusk, with the lakes below catching the last light and the sky doing everything it does at this hour in Rajasthan, is not something you will forget.

  • Entry: ₹80 (Indian nationals), ₹165 (foreign nationals)
  • Timings: 9 AM to 6 PM
  • Getting there: hired car, 30 minutes from the old city
  • Best time: 4:30 to 6 PM for the sunset panorama

5. Jag Mandir Island Palace , The Lake Within the Lake

Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur, Hii Stories, Golden triangle, Rajasthan tour, places to visit in udaipur, udaipur travel guide 2026, udaipur tourist places, best places in udaipur, lake pichola udaipur, city palace udaipur, lake palace hotel udaipur, sajjangarh monsoon palace, jag mandir udaipur, ambrai ghat udaipur, fateh sagar lake, udaipur sightseeing, things to do in udaipur, city of lakes rajasthan

Jag Mandir , a 17th-century island palace in the southern section of Lake Pichola , is one of the most beautiful and most undervisited major attractions in Udaipur.

The palace was built over three centuries by successive maharanas and served as a refuge for the Mughal prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan) when he was in revolt against his father Jahangir. The connection between the man who later built the Taj Mahal and this island palace in Rajasthan is one of those historical threads that makes Indian history feel like a single continuous story.

The elephant statues at the jetty , carved in white marble , are extraordinary. The courtyard garden, the carved pavilions, and the views back toward the City Palace from the island are among the finest in Udaipur. The restaurant on Jag Mandir serves lunch and evening drinks in a setting that puts almost every other restaurant in Rajasthan to shame.

Accessible only by boat from Rameshwar Ghat , which is entirely the point.

  • Entry: ₹400 per person including boat transfer
  • Best time: afternoon, for the light on the City Palace from the island
  • Restaurant: open for lunch and evening drinks , book ahead
  • Boat timing: boats run from Rameshwar Ghat throughout the day

From the Taj Mahal to the Lake Palace

Udaipur is the most rewarding extension of the Golden Triangle circuit — from the Taj Mahal that Shah Jahan built, to the island palace where he took refuge as a prince. Our Golden Triangle + Rajasthan tours connect both, with Jaipur and Jodhpur in between.

6. Ambrai Ghat , The Best View in Udaipur That Nobody Books

Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur, Hii Stories, Golden triangle, Rajasthan tour, places to visit in udaipur, udaipur travel guide 2026, udaipur tourist places, best places in udaipur, lake pichola udaipur, city palace udaipur, lake palace hotel udaipur, sajjangarh monsoon palace, jag mandir udaipur, ambrai ghat udaipur, fateh sagar lake, udaipur sightseeing, things to do in udaipur, city of lakes rajasthan

Every tourist in Udaipur knows the Lake Palace view from the Jagdish Temple side. Almost none of them find Ambrai Ghat.

Ambrai Ghat sits on the western shore of Lake Pichola , on the opposite side from the City Palace. The view from here is the one that photographers spend their careers trying to capture: the City Palace complex and the Lake Palace reflected in the lake together, the Aravalli hills behind everything, the whole panorama changing colour as the sun drops.

The Ambrai Restaurant, set directly on the ghat, serves dinner with this view from tables that are essentially on the water. It is not the most elaborate restaurant in Udaipur. It does not need to be. The best table in the city is the one closest to the water here at 6 PM.

The ghat itself is free to access. Come for the view. Stay for dinner. Tell no one.

  • Location: Ambrai Ghat, western shore of Lake Pichola
  • Ambrai Restaurant: open for dinner, reservations recommended during peak season
  • Ghat entry: free, always accessible

7. Fateh Sagar Lake , Where Udaipur Actually Lives

Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur, Hii Stories, Golden triangle, Rajasthan tour, places to visit in udaipur, udaipur travel guide 2026, udaipur tourist places, best places in udaipur, lake pichola udaipur, city palace udaipur, lake palace hotel udaipur, sajjangarh monsoon palace, jag mandir udaipur, ambrai ghat udaipur, fateh sagar lake, udaipur sightseeing, things to do in udaipur, city of lakes rajasthan

Udaipur has four lakes. Lake Pichola gets all the attention. Fateh Sagar, 2 kilometres north of the city centre, is where the locals actually go.

Larger and wilder than Pichola, Fateh Sagar is surrounded by the Aravalli hills with no palace architecture to frame it , just the water, the hills, and the sky. The lakeside promenade is one of the most pleasant evening walks in Udaipur, lined with street food vendors and locals out for their evening stroll.

Nehru Park , a small island in the middle of the lake accessible by boat , has a restaurant and garden that are perfect for a slow afternoon with no agenda. The Moti Magri hill above the lake is accessible by steps and contains a memorial to Maharana Pratap, the Mewar warrior king , the view from the top is one of the finest in the city.

For the version of Udaipur that exists outside the tourist circuit , where residents actually spend their evenings , Fateh Sagar is the answer.

  • Promenade entry: free
  • Boat to Nehru Park island: ₹30–50 per person
  • Moti Magri entry: ₹50 per person
  • Best time: 5 to 7 PM for the evening light on the hills

8. Jagdish Temple , Sacred and Magnificent

Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur, Hii Stories, Golden triangle, Rajasthan tour, places to visit in udaipur, udaipur travel guide 2026, udaipur tourist places, best places in udaipur, lake pichola udaipur, city palace udaipur, lake palace hotel udaipur, sajjangarh monsoon palace, jag mandir udaipur, ambrai ghat udaipur, fateh sagar lake, udaipur sightseeing, things to do in udaipur, city of lakes rajasthan

The Jagdish Temple , a 17th-century Indo-Aryan temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, 150 metres from the City Palace entrance , is one of the most beautifully carved temples in Rajasthan and consistently underestimated by visitors who treat it as a brief stop between the City Palace and the lake.

Built by Maharana Jagat Singh I in 1651, the temple took 1,500 craftsmen fifteen years to complete. The carved stone elephants at the entrance, the intricate sculptural panels covering every surface, and the brass image of Lord Vishnu inside are all exceptional.

In the early evening, as the temple lamps are lit for the evening aarti, the carved stone takes on a warmth that the harsh midday light denies it. The sound of bells and chanting carries down the steps to the lake road below.

You do not need to be religious to find Jagdish Temple moving. You need only to slow down, remove your shoes, and give the carved stone the time it deserves.

  • Entry: free
  • Timings: 4:15 AM to 1 PM and 4:15 PM to 8 PM
  • Best time: evening aarti, approximately 6:30 to 7:30 PM
  • Dress: modestly , shoulders and knees covered

9. Shilpgram Craft Village , Where Rajasthan's Craft Lives

Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur, hii Stories, Golden triangle, Rajasthan tour, places to visit in udaipur, udaipur travel guide 2026, udaipur tourist places, best places in udaipur, lake pichola udaipur, city palace udaipur, lake palace hotel udaipur, sajjangarh monsoon palace, jag mandir udaipur, ambrai ghat udaipur, fateh sagar lake, udaipur sightseeing, things to do in udaipur, city of lakes rajasthan

Shilpgram , 3 kilometres from the city centre , is a government-run craft village that replicates the traditional architecture of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Goa, and Maharashtra, with artisans from each region demonstrating their craft inside.

Potters, weavers, leather workers, painters, textile printers , all working, all willing to explain what they are doing and sometimes willing to let you try. The craft demonstrations here are genuine , not performances for tourists but actual production that can be purchased directly from the maker.

The annual Shilpgram Crafts Fair in December draws artisans from across India and is one of the finest craft events in the country. If your visit aligns, restructure your itinerary around it.

For travellers who care about craft , who want to understand what they are looking at when they buy a block-printed textile or a piece of pottery , Shilpgram provides the context that the bazaar shops cannot.

  • Entry: ₹50 per person
  • Timings: 11 AM to 7 PM
  • Best time: 3 to 6 PM
  • Getting there: auto-rickshaw, 15 minutes from the old city

The Full Rajasthan Story

Udaipur’s craft tradition, Jodhpur’s blue city, Jaisalmer’s Manganiyar musicians — the full Rajasthan circuit tells a single continuous story. If you’re thinking beyond Udaipur, our Rajasthan tour packages cover the whole route.

10. Vintage and Classic Car Museum , The Most Enjoyable Surprise in Udaipur

Top 10 Places to Visit in Udaipur, Hii Stories, Golden triangle, Rajasthan tour, places to visit in udaipur, udaipur travel guide 2026, udaipur tourist places, best places in udaipur, lake pichola udaipur, city palace udaipur, lake palace hotel udaipur, sajjangarh monsoon palace, jag mandir udaipur, ambrai ghat udaipur, fateh sagar lake, udaipur sightseeing, things to do in udaipur, city of lakes rajasthan

The Vintage and Classic Car Collection of the Maharanas of Mewar is one of the best museums in Rajasthan , and one of the most genuinely enjoyable two hours available in Udaipur for any kind of visitor.

The collection , housed in a converted royal garage near Fateh Sagar Lake , includes a 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom converted into a throne on wheels, a 1938 Cadillac, a World War Two-era Lincoln, and the car used in the Octopussy Bond film. All are in immaculate running condition. The stories attached to each vehicle , who drove it, where, in what circumstances , are told on display boards that are actually worth reading.

The museum is funny, unexpected, and completely different from every other attraction in the city. Visitors who spend an hour here universally enjoy it. That is a more reliable recommendation than most five-star reviews.

  • Entry: ₹250 per person
  • Timings: 9 AM to 9 PM daily
  • Getting there: Garden Hotel, next to Fateh Sagar Lake, 15 minutes from the old city

Which thing is famous in Udaipur?

Udaipur is most famous for Lake Pichola and the Lake Palace Hotel , the white marble island palace that has appeared in James Bond films and travel photography for decades and remains the most iconic image of Rajasthan’s City of Lakes. Beyond the lake, Udaipur is famous for the City Palace , the largest palace complex in Rajasthan , its miniature painting tradition, its Rajasthani cuisine, and its position as one of India’s finest heritage tourism destinations. The city is also internationally known as the setting for the James Bond film Octopussy (1983), which was filmed almost entirely at the Lake Palace Hotel and surrounding locations.

Is 2 days enough for Udaipur?

Two days covers the essential Udaipur , Lake Pichola boat ride, City Palace, Jagdish Temple, Ambrai Ghat at sunset, Fateh Sagar promenade, and a rooftop dinner with lake views. It is enough to understand why the city has the reputation it does. It is not enough to feel unhurried about it. Three days is the honest recommendation , the extra day allows Sajjangarh Palace at sunset, Jag Mandir island, Shilpgram, and the kind of slow morning at a lakeside cafe that turns a visit into an experience. Couples and honeymooners should plan for three to four days minimum , Udaipur rewards those who stay long enough to move at the city’s pace rather than their itinerary’s.

The ten most famous and most significant places in Udaipur are Lake Pichola, the City Palace, the Lake Palace Hotel (Taj), Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace, Jag Mandir Island Palace, Ambrai Ghat, Fateh Sagar Lake, Jagdish Temple, Shilpgram Craft Village, and the Vintage Car Museum. What to do in Udaipur in 1 day?

One day in Udaipur requires hard choices and a clear sequence. Begin at the City Palace at 9:30 AM , spend 2 hours in the main palace sections with a guide. Walk to Jagdish Temple , 20 minutes including the stop. Lunch at a lakeside restaurant on the Hanuman Ghat area. Boat ride on Lake Pichola at 4:30 PM , the sunset timing is non-negotiable, this is the centrepiece of any Udaipur day. Ambrai Ghat for the post-sunset view of the lit City Palace across the water. Dinner at Ambrai Restaurant or Upre by 1559 AD. One day covers the visual highlights. Sajjangarh, Fateh Sagar, Jag Mandir, and Shilpgram require a second day.
