Here is my full list of jaisalmer tourist places, built from years of taking guests around this city. 1. Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Quila)

This is where every trip to Jaisalmer starts, and it remains the single most visited of all the places to visit in Jaisalmer. Built in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, it is one of the few living forts in the world, meaning families still reside inside its walls. Around a quarter of the city’s population still lives within the fort, running homestays, shops, and rooftop cafes right inside the ramparts.

Timings: 8 AM to 6 PM daily
Entry fee: Around 50 rupees for Indians, higher for foreign visitors
How to reach: It sits right in the center of the city, a short auto ride or walk from most hotels

2. Patwon Ki Haveli

A cluster of five havelis built by a wealthy trader family, known for the most detailed stone carving I have seen anywhere in Rajasthan. Only one of the five is open to the public, but the exterior facade alone makes the short stop worthwhile.

Timings: 9 AM to 6 PM
Entry fee: Nominal, worth every rupee for the carved balconies alone
My tip: Bring a wide angle lens if you shoot photos, the facades are hard to capture otherwise

3. Gadisar Lake

Gadisar lake Jaisalmer is a man made reservoir that was once the city’s only water source. Among all the places to visit in Jaisalmer, this is the one I recommend for a slower morning. Today it is one of the calmest spots to watch the sunset, ringed by small temples and chhatris.

Best time to visit: Early morning or just before sunset
What to do: Take a short boat ride or just sit by the ghats and watch the birds
My tip: The Tilon Ki Pol gateway at the entrance has a story worth asking your guide about

4. Sam Sand Dunes

No list of places to visit in Jaisalmer is complete without the dunes. Sam is about 40 kilometers from the city and it is where most desert camps are based. The dunes stretch far enough that you can walk away from the crowd and still get an unbroken view of the horizon.

Best for: Camel safaris, jeep safaris, and sunset views
Best for couples: A private sunset camel ride here is one of the most requested experiences from my guests
My tip: Book a stay at a desert camp instead of a day trip, the stars here at night are worth the extra time

5. Bada Bagh

A garden of royal cenotaphs commissioned in the 16th century, set against a backdrop of windmills on the horizon. This is one of the more underrated places to visit in Jaisalmer, since most itineraries skip it entirely. Each chhatri was built for a former ruler of Jaisalmer, and the carving detail on the ceilings is easy to miss if you rush through.

Best time to visit: Sunrise or sunset for the best light on the chhatris
My tip: This spot is often skipped on short trips, but it takes barely 30 minutes and the photos are some of the best you will get in Jaisalmer

6. Kuldhara Village

An abandoned village with a legend attached to why its residents vanished overnight centuries ago. It is one of the more atmospheric places to see in Jaisalmer, especially near dusk when the ruins go quiet and the light turns soft.

Entry fee: Small fee applies
My tip: Go with a guide who knows the local story, it makes the ruins far more interesting than walking through alone

7. Nathmal Ki Haveli

Built by two brothers who reportedly worked on opposite sides of the building without coordinating, yet the symmetry is near perfect. The sandstone facade is carved so finely it almost looks like woodwork from a distance.

My tip: Look closely at the carved elephants near the entrance, no two are exactly alike

8. Salim Singh Ki Haveli

Known for its curved roof shaped like a peacock’s neck, this haveli belonged to a former prime minister of the region. The upper floor once had a wooden umbrella dome that gave the building its distinctive silhouette.

My tip: Pair this with Patwon Ki Haveli since both sit within a short walk of each other in the old city

9. Tazia Tower

A five story tower with balconies inspired by the shape of a Muslim tazia, standing inside the Badal Vilas palace complex. Each level has a different design, which is easy to notice once you know to look up.

My tip: It is a quick five minute stop but photographs beautifully against the blue sky

10. Desert National Park

One of the largest national parks in India, home to the endangered Great Indian Bustard along with desert foxes and chinkara. It rarely makes typical lists of places to visit in Jaisalmer, but it should. The landscape here shifts between grassland, scrub, and sand dunes, so it looks nothing like the fort area.

Best time to visit: Early morning safari for the best wildlife sightings
My tip: This is a must if you care about wildlife, most tourists skip it entirely which means fewer crowds

11. Khaba Fort

A smaller, quieter fort near Kuldhara with a small museum showing traditional Rajasthani village life. It sees a fraction of the crowd that the main fort gets, which makes it a good stop if you want a slower moment away from the tourist rush.

My tip: Combine this with Kuldhara Village since they sit close together, saving you a separate trip

12. Vyas Chhatri

A group of cenotaphs on a hilltop just outside the fort, considered one of the best sunset points in the city. From here you get a full view of the fort catching the last light, which is a shot most guests end up using as their trip highlight.

My tip: Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to grab a good spot, this place fills up fast in peak season

13. Jain Temples Inside the Fort

A cluster of intricately carved Jain temples dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries, tucked inside the fort walls. These temples are among the most overlooked places to visit in Jaisalmer, since most tourists walk right past the entrance without realizing what is inside. The ceiling carvings here rival anything I have seen in Ranakpur.

Timings: Morning hours are best, some sections close by early afternoon
My tip: Keep your shoulders and knees covered, and leave leather items outside before entering

14. Akal Wood Fossil Park

A quiet park showing fossilized wood over 180 million years old, a reminder that this desert was once a forest. The trunks are still in their original position, which makes it feel more like a discovery than a display.

My tip: It is not on most tourist itineraries, but if you enjoy geology or unusual stops, it is worth the short detour

15. Longewala War Memorial

Located near the India Pakistan border, this memorial marks the site of a famous 1971 war battle and can be combined with a Tanot Mata Temple visit. The museum here has recovered tanks and artillery on display, along with photographs from the battle itself.

My tip: This is a longer detour, so plan it only if you have an extra day and genuine interest in military history
