Discover the best places to visit in Delhi, from the Red Fort and Qutub Minar to hidden gems and peaceful gardens. Includes timings, entry fees, and practical tips.
15 Best Places to Visit in Delhi: My Complete Guide
I’ve been showing travelers around Delhi for years, and somehow, the city still manages to surprise me. You can spend one day walking through Mughal-era forts and the next eating your way through Old Delhi or escaping to a quiet garden.
There’s enough to keep you busy for a week, but if it’s your first time in the city, these are the 15 places I’d put at the top of your list. I’ve also included the timings, entry fees, and a few tips I share with guests based on my own visits.
Which is the most visited place in Delhi?
The Red Fort is one of the busiest and most popular historic attractions in Delhi. Its enormous scale, UNESCO World Heritage status, and connection with India’s Independence Day celebrations make it a natural first stop for many visitors.
For first-time visitors, I usually recommend starting here. Once you’ve seen the Red Fort, the history and architecture you encounter elsewhere in Delhi start to make a lot more sense.
What are the top 15 places to visit in Delhi?
Here are my 15 picks, based on what I’ve found works best for travelers seeing Delhi for the first time.
1. Red Fort
Built by Shah Jahan in 1639, the Red Fort was the main residence of the Mughal emperors for almost 200 years. Its massive red sandstone walls are impressive enough from the outside, but it’s worth going inside to see the palaces, courtyards, and gardens.
Timings: 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, closed Mondays
Entry fee: Rs 35 for Indians, Rs 500 for foreign nationals
My tip: If you have time, stay for the evening sound and light show. It gives you a much better sense of the fort’s history than simply walking from one building to another. It’s easily one of the most iconic places to visit in Delhi.
2. Qutub Minar
At 73 metres, Qutub Minar dominates the surrounding landscape and is one of Delhi’s most recognisable monuments. The tower itself is the highlight, but don’t leave without spending some time exploring the ruins and carvings around it.
Timings: Sunrise to sunset, open daily
Entry fee: Rs 35 for Indians, Rs 550 for foreign nationals
My tip: Go in the morning if you can. The light is softer for photographs, and you’ll avoid some of the bigger crowds later in the day. It remains one of the most photographed tourist places in Delhi.
3. Humayun’s Tomb
Often described as a precursor to the Taj Mahal, Humayun’s Tomb is one of my favourite places in Delhi to simply slow down. The tomb sits in a beautifully laid-out char bagh garden, and the symmetry is part of what makes the whole complex so impressive.
Timings: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, open daily
Entry fee: Rs 35 for Indians, Rs 550 for foreign nationals
My tip: Don’t rush straight to the tomb. Take your time walking through the gardens. There’s much more to see than the main building. This is one of the more peaceful places to visit in Delhi if you want a slower morning.
4. India Gate
India Gate is a 42-metre-high war memorial dedicated to Indian soldiers who died in World War I and other conflicts. It sits along the broad ceremonial avenues of central Delhi and is particularly lively in the evening.
Timings: Open 24 hours
Entry fee: Free
My tip: Come after sunset and spend some time on the lawns. It’s a simple experience, but it gives you a chance to see Delhi relaxing rather than rushing around. It’s one of the simplest things to do in Delhi that never gets old.
5. Lotus Temple
The Lotus Temple is instantly recognisable thanks to its enormous white petals. It’s a Bahá’í House of Worship and welcomes people of all faiths for prayer and quiet reflection.
Timings: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, closed Mondays
Entry fee: Free
My tip: Try to visit on a weekday morning. Weekend queues can get surprisingly long. It’s consistently ranked among the best places to visit in Delhi for quiet reflection.
6. Jama Masjid
Jama Masjid is one of India’s largest mosques and one of the defining landmarks of Old Delhi. From its courtyard, you can look out over the wonderfully chaotic streets around Chandni Chowk.
Timings: 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM to 6:30 PM
Entry fee: Free; camera fee may apply
My tip: If the southern minaret is open to visitors, climb it. The view over Old Delhi is fantastic, especially if you want to understand just how dense the neighbourhood really is. It’s one of the more atmospheric tourist places in Delhi to explore on foot.
7. Chandni Chowk
Chandni Chowk is not really a place you visit for one particular attraction. The experience is the streets themselves the shops, food stalls, spice markets, old buildings, rickshaws, and constant movement.
Timings: Most shops are open roughly 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM; many are closed Sundays
Entry fee: Free
My tip: Come hungry. Try the famous parathas around Paranthe Wali Gali, then explore the narrower market lanes on foot or take a rickshaw through the spice market. It’s one of the most rewarding things to do in Delhi if you love food.
8. Akshardham Temple
Akshardham is a much newer attraction than most of the monuments on this list, but the craftsmanship is extraordinary. The complex combines a huge temple with exhibitions and other cultural experiences.
Timings: 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM, closed Mondays
Entry fee: Temple entry is free; exhibitions and boat rides cost extra
My tip: Leave your phone and larger bags behind or use the available lockers. Photography restrictions are strict, so don’t arrive expecting to take pictures inside. It’s become one of the top places to visit in Delhi for families.
9. Rashtrapati Bhavan and Kartavya Path
Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India, sits at one end of Delhi’s grand ceremonial axis. The surrounding area is especially impressive when you see the wide avenues and government buildings stretching out toward India Gate.
Timings: Garden access is seasonal; check current opening dates
Entry fee: Around Rs 50 for individual visitors
My tip: Even if you don’t have time for a garden visit, drive through the area around sunset. The architecture and scale of central Delhi are worth seeing. It’s one of the grander places to visit in Delhi even from outside the gates.
10. Lodhi Garden
Lodhi Garden is one of those places that feels surprisingly peaceful considering you’re in the middle of a huge city. Scattered among the lawns and trees are several 15th-century tombs.
Timings: 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM, open daily
Entry fee: Free
My tip: This is one of my favourite places for an early morning walk. Go before the city gets busy and you’ll see locals exercising, walking, and enjoying the park. It’s one of my favourite places to visit in Delhi early in the day.
11. Agrasen ki Baoli
Hidden among the busy streets of central Delhi, Agrasen ki Baoli is a historic stepwell with a striking series of stone steps leading underground. It’s not a huge attraction, but it’s atmospheric and easy to combine with other central Delhi sights.
Timings: Sunrise to sunset, open daily
Entry fee: Free
My tip: Bring a wide-angle lens if you have one. The repeating lines and symmetry of the steps make for some excellent photographs. It’s a small but memorable entry on any list of tourist places in Delhi.
12. Hauz Khas Village
Hauz Khas is an unusual mix of old and new. You’ll find medieval ruins and a historic reservoir alongside cafes, restaurants, boutiques, and bars.
Timings: The ruins generally follow daylight hours; cafes and restaurants stay open later
Entry fee: Free for the park and ruins
My tip: Visit the historic area during the day, then come back in the evening if you want dinner or drinks. The atmosphere changes completely after dark. It’s one of the more versatile places to visit in Delhi depending on the time of day.
13. National Museum
If you want to understand India’s history before seeing its monuments, the National Museum is a good place to start. Its collection covers thousands of years, with everything from archaeological finds to sculptures, manuscripts, and decorative arts.
Timings: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closed Mondays
Entry fee: Rs 20 for Indians, Rs 650 for foreign nationals
My tip: Give yourself at least a couple of hours. If you enjoy ancient history, don’t skip the Harappan civilisation collection. It’s one of the most educational things to do in Delhi before sightseeing.
14. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib
Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is one of Delhi’s most peaceful places, despite being right in the middle of a busy part of the city. The Sikh shrine is known for its welcoming atmosphere and its community kitchen, or langar, which serves free meals to visitors.
Timings: Open 24 hours
Entry fee: Free
My tip: Cover your head before entering and remove your shoes. If you have time, sit down for the langar. It’s a meaningful part of the experience and something I encourage visitors to experience respectfully. It’s one of the most welcoming places to visit in Delhi regardless of your background.
15. Sunder Nursery
Just beside Humayun’s Tomb, Sunder Nursery combines historic Mughal-era structures with landscaped gardens, water features, and open spaces. It’s a nice change of pace after visiting Delhi’s more crowded monuments.
Timings: 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, open daily
Entry fee: Rs 35 for Indians
My tip: Pair it with Humayun’s Tomb. The two are close enough that you can easily visit both on the same morning or afternoon. It rounds out my list of the best places to visit in Delhi nicely.
These 15 places give you a good mix of Delhi’s history, architecture, food, markets, and quieter corners. Most are also relatively easy to reach by metro, auto-rickshaw, or a short cab ride.
Which places are best for friends, families, or couples?
The best places to visit in Delhi look different depending on who you’re travelling with. These are the combinations I usually recommend.
With friends
- Hauz Khas Village for cafes, restaurants, and an evening out
- Chandni Chowk for a proper Old Delhi food crawl
- Garden of Five Senses for a relaxed afternoon outdoors
These are the places to visit in Delhi with friends that I recommend most often.
With family
- India Gate for open space and an easy evening outing
- Akshardham Temple for the temple and cultural exhibitions
- Lodhi Garden for a relaxed walk, especially with younger children
These three consistently top my list of places to visit in Delhi with family.
For couples
- Lotus Temple for a quiet break from the city
- Sunder Nursery for a slow walk through the gardens
- Humayun’s Tomb around golden hour
Any of these three work well as a short list of places to visit in Delhi for couples looking for something quieter.
What are the top 30 places in Delhi?
If you’re staying in Delhi for longer than a couple of days, there’s plenty more to add to your list of places to visit in Delhi. Along with the 15 places above, I’d consider these:
- Purana Qila
- Jantar Mantar
- Raj Ghat
- Safdarjung Tomb
- National Rail Museum
- ISKCON Temple
- Garden of Five Senses
- Nehru Planetarium
- Tughlaqabad Fort
- Dilli Haat
- Feroz Shah Kotla
- Connaught Place
- Majnu Ka Tila
- World to Wonder Park
- Kalkaji Temple
With these 30 places, you could comfortably spend five to seven days exploring Delhi without feeling as though you’re doing the same thing every day. Between the two lists, you’ll have covered nearly every major tourist place in Delhi worth a proper visit.
What are 50 things to do in Delhi?
Delhi is about much more than monuments. Once you get away from the main tourist circuit, this list of things to do in Delhi becomes a lot more interesting especially if you enjoy food, markets, neighbourhoods, and everyday life.
Food experiences
- Try chaat and golgappas around Bengali Market
- Have butter chicken at a Karim’s outlet near Jama Masjid
- Join a food walk through Old Delhi for kebabs and street food

Markets and shopping
- Look for silver jewellery in Dariba Kalan
- Browse the clothes and accessories at Sarojini Nagar
- Shop for handicrafts at Dilli Haat
- Explore Janpath for souvenirs
- Visit Chandni Chowk for spices, fabrics, and traditional goods
Culture and heritage
- Watch the sound and light show at the Red Fort

- Visit the National Gallery of Modern Art
- Explore Mehrauli Archaeological Park
- Take a heritage walk through Shahjahanabad
Nature and open spaces
- Walk through Lodhi Garden early in the morning
- Look for birds around the Delhi Ridge

Day trips from Delhi
- Take a day trip to Agra for the Taj Mahal
- Stop at Fatehpur Sikri on the way to Agra
- Visit Neemrana Fort Palace for a short escape
- Head to Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary
- Visit Surajkund during the annual crafts fair
You don’t need to rush through all of these. Delhi is actually more enjoyable when you leave some room for wandering, eating, and simply seeing how the city works, and these things to do in Delhi work well alongside the sightseeing list above.
When is the best time to visit these places?
For most travellers, October to March is the most comfortable time to explore these places to visit in Delhi. Daytime temperatures are generally pleasant, although winter mornings can be quite cold and foggy.
- October to March: The best overall period for sightseeing, with comfortable daytime temperatures
- April to June: Very hot, with temperatures often climbing above 40°C
- July to September: Hot and humid, with monsoon rain and occasional waterlogging
- December and January: Pleasant afternoons but sometimes foggy mornings
For outdoor monuments such as Qutub Minar and Humayun’s Tomb, I usually recommend going early in the day. The weather is more comfortable, the light is better for photographs, and you’ll generally encounter fewer people.
How do I fit Delhi into a longer North India trip?
Delhi is the usual starting point for the Golden Triangle, which connects Delhi with Agra and Jaipur. It works particularly well if you’re visiting North India for the first time because you get a mix of history, architecture, food, and local culture without having to travel huge distances between destinations.
At Hii Stories, I design Golden Triangle tours that combine Delhi with the Taj Mahal in Agra and the forts and palaces of Jaipur. If you’re short on time, my 3-day Golden Triangle tour covers the main highlights, while the 4-day version gives you a little more time in each city.
If this is your first trip to North India, I also have a Golden Triangle guide covering the basics of planning the route before you book.
And if you’ve already seen the main attractions and want something different, I’ve put together guides to Delhi’s hidden gems and offbeat places, as well as a shorter list of must-do things in Delhi for travellers who prefer to keep their itinerary simple.
Several of Delhi’s major monuments, including Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb, and the Red Fort, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites protected for their historical and cultural importance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the top 15 places to visit in Delhi?
My top 15 are Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb, India Gate, Lotus Temple, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, Akshardham Temple, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Lodhi Garden, Agrasen ki Baoli, Hauz Khas Village, National Museum, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, and Sunder Nursery.
I’ve chosen them because they offer a good mix of history, architecture, food, culture, and green spaces, while also being practical to fit into a Delhi itinerary. Together, they make up the best places to visit in Delhi for a first trip.
Which is the most visited place in Delhi?
The Red Fort is among the most visited historic attractions in Delhi. Its Mughal history, enormous scale, and connection with India’s Independence Day celebrations make it one of the city’s essential sights.
For a first trip, I’d put it near the top of your itinerary, alongside the other top 15 places to visit in Delhi I’ve listed above.
What are the top 30 places in Delhi?
Beyond the 15 places above, I’d add Purana Qila, Jantar Mantar, Raj Ghat, Safdarjung Tomb, National Rail Museum, ISKCON Temple, Garden of Five Senses, Nehru Planetarium, Tughlaqabad Fort, Dilli Haat, Feroz Shah Kotla, Connaught Place, Majnu Ka Tila, Waste to Wonder Park, and Kalkaji Temple.
If you have five days or more, these additional places give you plenty of options beyond Delhi’s main tourist circuit.
What are 50 things to do in Delhi?
The best things to do in Delhi go well beyond visiting monuments. You can explore Old Delhi’s food scene, shop in local markets, visit museums and galleries, walk through historic neighbourhoods, spend time in the city’s gardens, or take day trips to places such as Agra and Fatehpur Sikri.
I’d recommend choosing a few experiences from each category rather than trying to tick all 50 off a list. That way, you’ll have time to actually enjoy Delhi instead of spending the whole trip rushing from one attraction to the next.
